A Checklist for Winterizing Your Home

If you’re starting your search for homes in Grand Forks ND but still have to stay warm in your current home, we have a handy checklist of ways to keep your home warm and toasty as winter continues. Plus, as you search for a new home, you can keep these winterizing tips in mind to help you in your search, whether you’re buying an older home or a brand new home.

  • Insulation
Proper insulation plays a key role in keeping your home’s temperature comfortable all year long, but especially during the winter. Well-insulated exterior walls are important and should be asked about when purchasing a new home. Other areas to consider are basements and crawl spaces, which should be insulated to stop cold air from seeping in. Attics should also be well insulated, including corners and joins to help keep energy bills low.
  • Doors & Windows

Drafts from doors and windows create a battle between cold and heat, with your wallet being the biggest victim when your high energy bill arrives. To avoid these uncomfortable and expensive drafts, use caulk and weather stripping around doors, windows, and other openings in your home’s exterior. You may also want to add door sweeps to the bottom of exterior doors to further insulate against outdoor temperatures.

  • Roof Maintenance
Proper roof maintenance is vital for maintaining your home’s interior temperature, so make sure there are no leaks, or damaged shingles. You should also make sure your gutters are clear – especially after all the leaves have fallen – to prevent potential ice dams. If you have trees near your home with branches overhanging your roof, it’s a good idea to trim them so they don’t fall and damage your roof during a snow or ice storm.
  • Heating System
You should check your heating system every year, ideally before the cold weather arrives, to catch any potential problems before they become a serious issue. Don’t forget to change your system’s air filter, as well, ranging from 1-3 months depending on usage and the environment. A programmable thermostat can be a big help in managing your home’s heating and cooling.
  • Pipe Insulation
Frozen pipes can result in costly repairs, so it’s best to keep them protected with proper insulation. Foam pipe insulation is helpful, especially for exposed pipes in unheated areas. Don’t forget to keep a trickle of water running during particularly frigid temperatures to avoid freezing.

These are a few key points to keep in mind to ensure your home stays warm and affordable during our cold winters. If you’re looking for warm, comfortable homes in Grand Forks ND, reach out and contact us today to let us help you find your cozy dream home.
