DIY Home Makeovers for Dog Lovers

Dogs are a part of the family and what some people call spoiling, dog lovers call pampering. After all, why shouldn’t our canine family members enjoy some of the same perks we do? If you’re purchasing one of the new homes for sale in Grand Forks ND, here are a few DIY additions you can add to make your dog feel like a welcome member of the pack.

The kitchen is often the heart of the home and it becomes a spot where dogs and humans alike congregate and enjoy spending time together, especially over some tasty snacks. The kitchen is also where many dogs eat their meals. A great way to give your dog its own dining area, with the added benefit of not having bowls stuck in odd places, is by building a feeding area into the end of a cabinet or island. All you really need is a shelf at the dog’s level with holes cut in for the dog bowls to sit in. For a fancier addition, create a recessed cabinet with the shelf for the bowls and a drawer overhead to store the dog food.

Having crate-trained pups is a benefit, but the larger the dog, the more intrusive the crate can be, especially if you keep it in a family room. A popular choice is to build a cabinet or side table around the crate. The crate then becomes part of the room’s furnishings, keeping the widest part of the crate open for the dog to easily get in and out and keep an eye on everyone, while framing it in a useful table. If you add drawers to the piece, that becomes a handy place for storing leashes, bags, vet paperwork, and other dog-related paraphernalia.

If you have dogs that love nothing more than getting dirty and muddy, consider adding in a handy washing station to one of the new homes for sale in Grand Forks ND. Tile a section of the laundry room or garage and create a basin or add in a large sink, depending on your dog’s size and install a hose-type shower head. You can easily wash your dog and then throw any dirty towels straight into the wash.

Whether you convert the space under the stairs into a doggy den or build a special shaded dog house and feeding area outside, think about your dog’s needs and how they can be incorporated into your home design and you’ll all be happy.
