How to Incorporate Hygge Décor Into Your Home

Hygge is all over Instagram and other popular design sites again. If you haven’t heard of it before, Hygge (hoo-gah) is a Danish concept that goes beyond design, focusing on creating a warm, natural, cozy vibe. While there’s no direct translation, there are still easy ways to incorporate it into your Grand Forks homes to create a comfortable, stylish atmosphere that should create an overall sense of well-being.

Appealing textures, natural woods, plants, and cozy candles are some of the features you’ll find in hygge design. It’s particularly ideal as cooler weather starts to approach, as the idea of being cozy and warm, physically and emotionally, is important. Look for throws in soft textiles that you’ll enjoy curling up under on the sofa or your favorite chair. Don’t forget to include rugs that feel good under bare feet but also add a nice touch of warmth and color to the room. Include pillows in a variety of tactile fabrics and complementary colors.

For lighting, aim for soft, warm lamps and adjustable overhead lights. A mix of candles adds a homey touch, and if you have a fireplace, make the most of it! Consider adding in some greenery on the mantel above, especially evergreens with soothing scents.

Your goal is to create a space that feels the opposite of cold and sterile, while making the most of the concept of less is more. Skip the grays and whites and go for creams and other earthy neutral colors. You can then use any range of colors for accent pieces and personality.

Instead of lots of furniture, look for well-made pieces that show real craftsmanship. You want to leave some space in the room that is uncluttered, leaving space in your mind to relax and unwind. You don’t have to go pure minimalist, but aim for organization and use things like natural baskets for storage, and wood chests for everything from toys to blankets and pillows. Keep your focus on natural materials such as cotton, linen, leather, and wood.

You can certainly include decorations, as well. Just choose them thoughtfully, picking pieces that complement each other and give you a sense of joy and happiness. Decorate your walls with works of art that appeal to you or create a gallery wall of family photos that remind you of happy memories.

Hygge often turns to nature and simplicity to help make life a little more relaxed and soothing. It can be a wonderful mixture of stylish elements combined to create warmth and welcome, so choose what works best for you and your Grand Forks homes.
